Sony Bean, NW-E207 Drag and Drop
A surprise came early for me! I was able to have one of my presents this Christmas early, so I could test it out.
It was a cute looking Sony Bean, you can buy a Sony Bean NW-E207 from amazon.
At first attempt in using it… surprise surprise I never read instructions as they are for well better not say as I ended up reading them, never owned an Ipod either so that’s my defence.
I sorted out 1gb of music and tried to drag and drop it over on to it. After a very long time to transfer even with USB2 it took around 10 minutes, needless to say was pretty pissed hacked off when I realised that the Bean was able to detect any files on it! Now why oh why can you not drag and drop to mp3 players? There obviously must be some sort of technical limitation?
Needless to say was disappointed with first use, and had to resort to using Sonic Stage, which is terrible, and if it doesn’t look bad enough it has to be full screen too, and I mean FULL SCREEN (don’t even get to see the task bar!)
Anyway this was enough to send me on a little quest and have a hunt on every audio forum possible to see if drag and drop was possible. I’m glad to say it almost is, well it is but you have to install additional software. You need to download the Sony MP3 File Manager and then you can drag and drop music until your ears drop off. However all your music can only go in one directory/folder so you cant sort them out into albums if you do it this way… why oh why half arse something? Especially from Sony! With years of making the Walkman you would have thought that there would be no usability issues at all!

But now all that’s sorted I am nearly 100% happy with my Sony Bean, there is one little thing which is a nuisance… the hold switch! The hold switch is also the release for the internal USB connector (inbuilt USB is a blessing). The problem is to take it off hold you need to move this shutter about 2mm, if you open it anymore than that it starts to pop up the USB connector. They really should have fitted some sort of locking mechanism to this and then it would have been perfect.
The pdf instructions for the Sony Bean models including the NW-E207 can be downloaded from here.
But for the real positives, this is IDEAL for exercise as it fits in one hand and you can control everything very easily without having to look down or use two hands. And of course the biggest selling point ever has to be that it has 50 hours of battery life!!! Well if you use the Sony ATRAC standard otherwise with good old fashioned MP3 it will last 40 hours. It even has a quick 3 minute charge where will give you 3 hours play time… now this is what you call portable.
*** UPDATE ***
Sonic Stage 3.4 is now available for download. However it is still just as shit crap! Does anyone know of any alternatives to Sonic Stage and the MP3 File Manager?
Well my Sony Bean had broke, the USB plug had stopped locking in place. So I sent it back for a replacement, and ordered the black one too
The new Sony Bean I received has had one really annoying problem fixed which is fantastic. Now you have to slide back the hold switch all the way back before the USB Plug pops out… a simple fix which i’m not sure why it wasn’t like this in the first place!
Also due to many requests on “How to reset a Sony Bean”, all you have to do is slide back the USB Plug cover and next to where the USB Plug pops up you will see a litle hole with Reset next to this. You need to stick a pin down here and hold it for a bit and then it resets itself.

Hello, I purchased the sony beans (model NWE305) for both of my daughters. Like you, I wanted to have the “drag and drop” capability. I have contacted Sony since neither your model or my model is listed on the download page for the mp3 file manager. Just curious, did you download version 2.0 of this software? I live in Canada and sony has been NO help at all regarding this issue. They’ve been giving me the real runaround. I absolutely hate the sonicstage software. Found your blog doing a search on this same topic. Not a lot of info about it yet but comforting to know that someone has had the same issue!

All works fine here too. Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!!!
Comment by JOEL THAM on 6 January 2006:
I personally feel that the sony bean walkman overall is a great product, with great sound, excellent battery life and spots a great look as well. Unfortunately downloading songs into the “bean” using the software providedis a bit tedious and troublesome. I will say it should be perfect if we could just drag abd drop songs into the “bean” like many other MP3 players out there.
Comment by Fleur on 30 January 2006:
Help!
Apparently the bean has a radio but how on earth do you get it on the radio?
Comment by Alex Asigno on 30 January 2006:
Only certain models have the built in fm radio i know that the Sony Bean NW-E305 does, what model do you have?
Comment by Michael Minton on 18 February 2006:
Help!
Is it possible to charge a bean when you do not have access to a USB point? ie. On holiday?
Comment by Laurent on 18 February 2006:
I have *exactly* the same bean (NW-E207), yet after installing PA_Driver.exe and MP3 File Manager 2.0, the MP3 File Manager says it can’t find a supported device (and I did check my NW-E207 was inserted).
I ignored it not being able to find my bean, and just opened the file manager itself, and it was able to transfer mp3’s to the device (by dragging and dropping onto the panel), *BUT* my bean refused to play them…
I’m guessing it needs to actually identify the bean as being an NW-E207 but it just doesn’t find it…
How did you get the MP3 File Manager to work?
Comment by Alex Asigno on 19 February 2006:
Michael you can buy a USB Charging DC Power Adaptor part number DCC-U50A.
Laurent you shouldn’t need to do anything else, it should notice it when you plug it in. Have you tried it on someone elses pc?
Comment by Michael Minton on 23 February 2006:
Thanks Alex your a star!! appreciate your help.
Now i can listen to the Arctic Monkeys in Mexico
Cheers Mike
Comment by Laurent on 26 February 2006:
The thing is, I’d like it to work on mine aswell. The MP3 File Manager site doesn’t say it supports the NW-E207 (it shows a list of supported devices). But I take it it does actually support it since you got it to work. In any case, it doens’t look like very professional software (more like amateur), which is probably the reason for its low reliability.
Same goes for SonicStage, worst piece of software I’ve ever had to use (next to the MP3 File Manager ofcourse). I’m still using it now, and having gone through the barbaric means of downloading it (finding it is near impossible, and then it starts downloading directx 9.0c whether you’ve already got it or not) and the frequent crashes make me hate it more every day.
I love my bean, yet, ‘it could have bean so much more’. Seriously, if Sony had just taken care of drag n drop, and native mp3/ogg/wma support, the bean would have been a killer product. I hear theyre discontinuing the bean…
Comment by Linas on 26 February 2006:
THNX VERY VERY VERY MUCH! man i love u!
I was searching the net how to run that shi*** Sonic smth because it always drops an error and now when i typed the name of my player in google i found u! THNX!
Comment by Alex Asigno on 27 February 2006:
Really never knew they were going to discontinue it! Its a shame as its an excellent product, its just the software which lets it down.
And to make matters worse mine has broke
Ive emailed John Lewis about it so hopefully should be sorted soon.
The USB plug isnt locking in place, which makes it very hard to try and plug in to charge up!
Anyone else had any problems with this?
Comment by Sebastian on 1 March 2006:
Hi. When I connect the bean to the pc I get the following error message: CHARGE ERROR.
I tried pushing the reset button but the message is still there and It`s out of battery so I can`t get into the main menu
Does anyone knows how to fix this?
Comment by Alex Asigno on 1 March 2006:
Sebastian have you tried it on another PC? If its still not charging it sounds like your bean is faulty
Comment by Paul C on 8 March 2006:
Hello out there, I’m fortunate that I’ve just received my Bean off my kind in-laws as a present. As its my very first MP3 I am having trouble in understanding if it is possible to Random play across all my loaded albums and if it is possible, how do I do it?
I’ve read and re-read the manual pages 22-24 but the rep/sound button doesn’t appear to do anything!!
Very frustrating for an MP3 virgin.
Help much appreiciated.
Comment by Alex Asigno on 9 March 2006:
Paul you should have to press the REP/SOUND button, this will display another icon underneath the play stop one. It will say SHUF on the screen on the third press. It should change through to repeats then shuffle if its not you bean must be faulty.
Comment by John McKenna on 9 March 2006:
Thanks guys! Was about to buy a bean for my wife, as I’m pro Sony, w800i, Bravia, video, the works. Shall have another think, and probably go for a Walkman A3000. Appreciate the headsup
Comment by Armani on 16 March 2006:
Hello, just got my bean, seems pretty cool, but having one problem, cant turn it off…?! I’ve searched the book, nothing, the net, nothing… help!
Comment by Alex Asigno on 17 March 2006:
How to turn off a Sony Bean, you need to slide the cover off of the hold position and press the centre of the main button. This stops the track and displays a square. Then just put the switch back in to the hold position and it automatically turns its self off in a few seconds.
Comment by Laurent on 18 March 2006:
Hey Alex, it’s me again. I just wanted to tell you, my bean broke aswell (the hold mechanism), I just went to my local Sony Centre with my proof of purchase and they just gave me a new one!
Kudos to Sony
Comment by josh on 26 March 2006:
i have a problem, i just got my bean but when i take it out of the usb port
it turns off and i don’t know how to turn it on.
Comment by Alex Asigno on 29 March 2006:
Hi Josh, sounds like your Sony Bean is faulty. It shouldnt turn off when you unplug it.
To turn your Sony Bean on all you should have to do is slide open the hold switch, or if already open to press the centre button.
Comment by Mandy on 20 April 2006:

Comment by Amanda on 11 June 2006:
Hey, I got a bean here. After my I unplug it from the computer, it turns off. Since I didn’t read this whole thing yet, I was thinking well every mp3 you wanna turn on is just pretty much pres the play/pause button. So it’s in the center right? WIth all the arrows? I hold down…and nothing happens. So…I was wondering how long it freakin’ takes. And also, when you put the songs inside the mp3 when you open that gay software, can you just get the songs inside or do you HAVE TO HAVE the ugly folders with it? Is there a way NOT TO have the folders with it? Thanks for helpin’.
By the way, will you please send me my answer? Because I randomly found your page on yahoo and I don’t think it’s possible I will get back here. Thanks a bunch.

i have a white sony bean. it is the one with less memory. i have only had one problem. my hold button is kinda broken. i have to pull it back all the way to release hold. i wish i could fit some more songs on my bean. i want a black one.
tips
1. be sure to find the unplug usb button on your computer. press this button before you unplug it or your songs might get harmed. my unplug button is located on the lower right of the desktop.
2. check out your menu by holding the button down with the file on it. you will find some pretty cool stuff.

I’m waiting for my NWE205 to arrive after chucking my dead iPod shuffle in the bin. I have an iPod USB charger, do you think I’ll be able to use this with the Bean?
Comment by dorothy on 11 September 2006:
Going on the Sony site there doesnt seem to be a File Manager download for Bean NW-E207 (even though it is mentioned) Several other models are there but not that one. Could I download File Manager for another number ie E103/E403/505 etc. on the Sony list or would that cause problems with my Bean? Have you found another site that actually mentions and gives download for NW-E207. What did you download to your player? Appreciate any help.
Comment by Alex Asigno on 12 September 2006:
Go to the link specified in my post and then click on the file manager link.
You need to download this version.
“Driver & MP3 File Manager Ver.2.0 Installer
Applicable Model : NW-E103/E105/E107/E403/E405/E407/E503/E505/E507″

Thank you for such a quick reply. I have taken Sonic Stage off my computer and am trying to download the Driver and File Manager – for some reason I am finding it difficult. Having created a mp3_Inst folder on my C drive items 3. onward in the follow up steps dont happen. Any idea what I am doing wrong. I thought it would be a simple download.
Comment by Susan on 14 September 2006:
How do you change the display screen to fruits, water, or sky? I have tried everything. All it does is display the music note and that’s it.
Comment by dorothy on 15 September 2006:
Hi
Just to let you know I have sorted out the downloading of the File Manager. So no problem for you to answer – thank you.

I can’t figure out how to get the bean to playback wma format. Their advertising says it will do this, but I have been trying for hours and all I get on my bean is “no data” when I try to transfer. I have loaded the MP3 File Manager version 2 in hopes that it would work, but alas, no luck. Has anyone been able to load a WMA file to their bean? I am trying to download audio books from the local library and that is the format they require. I am about ready to throw this device in the trash!
Comment by Jessica on 19 October 2006:
Ok….I got the sony bean mp3 player last tear and it has been working fine.A couple of days ago I turned it on and it said file error. Then i reset the mp3 player and connected it to my pc and now it says memory error. For some reason sonic stage doesn’t read the mp3 player and i am unable to transfer songs to the bean. Now i am only able to play the fm tuner.Does anyone know anything about this?PLEASE!
Comment by Sayor on 31 October 2006:
I’ve had the bean for about six months now, and just recently I’ve had gotten two shocks in my ear. My down button isn’t working either, when I press down it goes up. And now, the main button pad is all messed up. Also when I am listen to the bean it will shut off and return to the top of my songs. I’ve had so many problems. I am wanting to return and not get it back. I know few friends that has the Black bean and they have small problems as I do. So I don’t really want it to get repaired and get a new one. Who is to say that it won’t happen again in the future?
Comment by Alex on 1 November 2006:
As you can see here, one of the main problems with the Sony beans is the user. I’ve had mine for four months and it’s reasonably good. Don’t get it wet, though.
Comment by Juhan on 13 November 2006:
My computer doesn’t read the BEAN , so I can’t put new songs on or remove them , but it charges the battery when i put it to USB port. SO What might b the problem????????

Regarding the sony nw-207, how i have’nt hopped off the wall yet i do’nt know. Had to download new version 4.2 before i managed to get anything on it, but still problems.
For some tracks i get the message, unable to transfer data. How do i overcome this? Reasons given are, unable to find file, or copy right protected.
Comment by Sharon on 26 November 2006:
I purchased a refurbished Sony Bean. At first I used SonicStage; however, it would always terminate so I would not be able to access it. Afterwards I used the MP3 File Manager, and it was working well. I deleted SonicStage, and it continued working fine. However, recently my computer cannot detect the device anymore. It says that the drivers aren’t installed. So I checked the online manual and I followed its instructions to install SonicStage again, and I did. However, it does not work. I think it is because my Bean is the one that needs to be repaired. I have the same problem with Juhan (#50). Is there a way to fix this problem? Or, if the Bean is the problem, is there any way to return it or anything?

So glad I found this post, I though I was the only person who thinks the bean is fantastic, and its just the software that lets it down
Wikipedia has loads of info and a few alternative programs to SS, though not for my model *sniff*
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SonicStage
Unfortunately, the slidey back plastic covering the usb slid back too far one day and just kinda came off in my hand! I haven’t heard of any other problems like this and im thinking its time to pop down the sony centre
Lets hope that even after several years since purchase they’ll take pity on me anyways

I got my sony bean at christmas last year and i love it! Only ever since then its been graudually falling appart! I have managed to put it in the washing machine, make the hold button fall off and some time before that the main button fell off! It still seemed to be working fine though so i wasnt bothered. But just recently when i connect it to my computer it doesnt connect properly. It still charges but i cant transfere any songs as my computer seems to think its not there. The little charging symbol is still there though! Im so confused!
Anyone got any ideas?
HELP!!
Comment by Ozzy Sadiq on 19 October 2007:
OK people, ive figured out what to do, If you have a Formatting Error appear then listen up. Go on the menu of the Bean and go to Advance Settings, The word Format should appear, select OK, you have now restored the original files. Continue with transerfing files. You might need to uninstall SonicStage and reinstall it again.

I recently bought a 1GB Sony Bean in Cotton Candy Pink – REALLY cute device but the file format absolutely sucks BIG TIME! How can they (Sony) call this thing an MP3 Player when it is not MP3’s that it’s playing? I own a Creative Zen V that I really love, Drag and drop files (Once you get into the folder that contains the music) it’s a snap – It has it’s own program too but NOTHING like this Sony Bean Sonic Stage crap. I am a Sony Lover but this thing is NOT what I call customer easy. You have to know a few things about a computer to add music to your Bean. Luckily I have knowledge of the PC – I would be ripping the hair out of my head as we speak if I hadn’t. I feel for them people who know nothing about a PC.

Hi there.
have had my bean for over a year now, but only used for half of that time. I has it set on my favorite radio stations, had the date and time set, everything to my liking. Friend of mine played with it, and now everything, except the music is a mess. And cannot for the life of me, reset the FM tuner, or even reset the time, because of JOG button is now too sensitive. I have tried to reset, but nothing helps.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
